Freedom, in kindness

Permalink 04/17/11 18:48, by michael, Categories: Quotes with Meditations , Tags: freedom, kindness, resentment, slavery

"He that is kind is free, though he is a slave; he that is evil is a slave, though he be a king."  -St. Augustine (found at www.ironiccatholic.com)

The 'evil' doesn't have to be criminal or scandalous.  When i'm envious or resentful (with the best of reasons!) - when i am unkind - i am not free.  What is it about resentment?  I can so easily catch a resentment, -and be miserable... i.e., not free.

When i'm grateful, conscious of who i am, when my focus, my attention is on kindness -when i'm being kind to others, i feel like a million bucks.  Resentment evaporates and i am free.

I've noticed though, it must be sincere, it must be genuine.  Otherwise, it just creates more resentment!
